Admit it. We all have made this mistake before.
For entrepreneurs, having surplus cash gives you flexibility and more assets for your company. But why do you still feel short and feel like it’s not enough when opportunity arrives? Many entrepreneurs may relate to this situation: You had a good run. Sales are solid, expenses are covered, and for the first time in a while, there’s cash sitting in the business account that isn’t immediately needed. The question is whether that money will still be working as hard as you do six months from now.
It’s easy to stay complacent when you’re unaware of the challenges your business has to face in the coming years. Okay, let’s say you left your cash in a regular bank account. Yes, it’s safe, but it’s the safest way to slowly erode the value of your money due to inflation, supply and demand, interest rates, economic growth, capital flows, and government policies. If there is one thing that stuck with me during my master’s, it is that time is the most valuable asset we have right now. Surplus cash is a privilege. Letting it sit idle is a choice.
To give it a clearer picture, have you noticed how much your favorite Chickenjoy at Jollibee costs right now? Ten years ago, one piece of Chickenjoy Solo in the Philippines in 2016 cost around Php 75 – Php 87. Now it costs around Php 97 à la carte. It only went up about 15-25%, while overall prices in the Philippines rose closer to 35-45%. That means the peso in your pocket loses more value than the price of your favorite meal.
If your money just sat in a savings account or under the mattress, its purchasing power shrank. This is why UITFs exist, and thousands of Filipinos are transitioning to investing to outpace inflation. Professional managers invest in stocks, bonds, or a mix so your money has a chance to grow faster than prices. Even starting with a small amount is better than doing nothing. Moving into a UITF requires a decision, paperwork, and a small mental shift. Many simply never act. Losses feel roughly twice as painful as equivalent gains feel good. But the game is truly in the long term.

It’s natural to keep cash where you can see it. Many successful entrepreneurs have a mental bucket where they set aside surplus money to allocate to capital appreciation or future projects that can improve their business. For as low as Php 1000 or $1000, even SMEs can invest their hard-earned money in Money Market Funds (a risk-averse option) or a Multi-Asset Funds for aggressive investing. Let’s say you invest your Php 10,000 in a UITF account now. If the NAVPU grows by 10%, then your money has earned 1000 more. Depending on your risk appetite, a UITF can be an invaluable habit that gives your business the flexibility to withdraw cash when needed.
